Patios & sandstone

A patio is something you look at every day, so the details matter: straight lines, even joints, steps that feel right and water running away from the house.

Porcelain patio laid to a fall

The detail

Patios & sandstone around Crewe

We lay Indian sandstone, natural limestone, slate and porcelain. Sandstone gives a warm, traditional look; porcelain is cleaner, more modern and very easy to look after, though it needs cutting and a priming slurry to bond properly.

Every slab goes down on a full mortar bed rather than five spots of cement, which is what stops them rocking and cracking later. We set the patio a step down from the damp course and lay it to a slight fall so rain runs off into the garden or a drain.

How we do it

What happens on the job

  1. Design

Size, shape, steps and slab choice worked out with you on site.

  2. Prepare

Turf and soil dug out, sub-base laid and compacted.

  3. Lay

Slabs laid on a full mortar bed to a fall, with priming slurry on porcelain.

  4. Point

Joints filled with mortar or a resin jointing compound.

Questions

Patios: common questions

Especially popular in Nantwich, Sandbach, Alsager, Holmes Chapel, Willaston, Wistaston, Audlem, Goostrey.

Porcelain or sandstone?

Porcelain if you want a crisp look and minimal upkeep, sandstone if you prefer something softer and more natural. We'll bring both.

Do I need planning permission for a patio?

Back garden patios at ground level generally don't. Raised decks and platforms can be different.

Can you level a sloping garden?

Yes. Steps and small retaining walls are often the neatest way to get a flat seating area on a slope.
