Decorative stone for a gravel drive

The detail

Gravel driveways around Crewe

Out towards Audlem, Goostrey and Wybunbury we lay a fair bit of gravel. It looks at home next to older cottages and farm buildings, and it lets rain soak straight through.

What stops a gravel drive turning into a rutted mess is what goes under it. We lay a compacted sub-base, a weed membrane and, on most drives, plastic stabilising grids so the stones can't be pushed around by tyres. Solid edges keep it off the lawn and the road.

How we do it

What happens on the job

  1. Survey

Agree the layout, stone size and colour, and check the drainage.

  2. Groundwork

Dig out, lay and compact the sub-base.

  3. Edge & grid

Set the edging and lay membrane and stabilising grids.

  4. Gravel

Fill with a 20mm-ish decorative gravel to the right depth.

Questions

Gravel: common questions

Especially popular in Nantwich, Haslington, Wybunbury, Audlem, Goostrey.

Will the gravel end up on the road?

Not if there's a solid apron and edging at the front. We usually put a strip of block or setts at the entrance for that reason.

What size gravel is best for a drive?

Around 14–20mm angular stone locks together better than small round pea gravel and is much easier to walk on.

Do you lay resin-bonded gravel?

We'd usually steer you towards resin-bound instead, which is permeable and smoother. We'll talk you through the difference.
