The detail
Block paving around Crewe
Block paving is still the most popular drive we lay around Crewe. It suits pretty much any house, from a Victorian terrace to a new-build, and it's the easiest surface to repair down the line.
Most of the work is in the ground. We dig down to firm subsoil, put in a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, then a screeded sand bed, and lay the blocks with a vibrating plate. Cheshire clay holds water, so falls and drainage are planned before a single block goes down.

How deep do you dig for a block-paved drive?
It depends on the ground, but for a drive taking cars we're usually looking at around 200–250mm to fit a proper sub-base, sand bed and the block itself.
Is permeable block paving worth it?
If the drive slopes towards the house or the road, or there's nowhere for water to run to, it's often the simplest way to stay within the planning rules.
Can you match an existing block?
We can usually get close. Older blocks fade, so we'll show you samples on site rather than pick from a brochure.
